This project involved the trenchless rehabilitation of sewer mains as well as the inspection, evaluation, and geopolymer lining rehabilitation of three sewer segments to restore structural integrity. Careful planning with the Pittsburgh Zoo and PPG Aquarium was important because of the project’s close proximity to them. The pipe rehabilitation involved line segments of 680-feet of 48-inch sanitary brick sewer, 680-feet of 60-inch sanitary brick sewer, and 150-feet of 101-inch brick arched sewer pipe. It also required an overall total of over 450,000-pounds of geopolymer material applied in thicknesses ranging from 1-inch to 2-inches thick. This internal sprayed-on rehabilitation will extend the life of the pipe over 50 years and saved the owner millions of dollars in excavation and bypass work.
This project received a Diamond Award in the Waste and Stormwater Category at the 2024 Diamond Awards for Engineering Excellence, presented by ACEC/PA.
