Employee Spotlight: Austin Markley
Where are you from?
Darlington, MD
How long have you been at Spiniello?
About 4 years.
Tell us about your family. Hobbies outside of work?
My family consists of my wife (Stephanie) and our Great Pyrenees dog (Appa). We like to go to concerts, sporting events (Ravens/Orioles games), and to play pinball. We both snowboard and surf and love any activity outdoors.
Favorite project you've worked on? Biggest accomplishment — at work or in life?
My favorite project that I worked on while at Spiniello Companies would be the PAW (Pennsylvania American Water) job/contract (PA-23-1174) we conducted in Coatesville, PA. It was a 24” slip-lining contract and was in a beautiful rural area outside of Lancaster, PA. The job was very large with multiple phases, lasting over a year as Spiniello performed work. I performed multiple safety trainings and safety evaluations for this project and built great relationships with each supervisor while ensuring safe working environments.
What's something people here don't know about you?
While living in Breckenridge, CO I competed in professional snowboarding events and had the privilege to be sponsored by Saloman (a major ski / snowboard company). While competing in an event I unfortunately land awkwardly and separated the AC joint in my left clavicle which made me take a break from extreme sports.
What do you like about the work here?
One aspect of work I enjoy while working with Spiniello Companies is the changing environment. In my past I have worked in multiple fixed work environments like manufacturing assembly lines and fabrication sites. When I made the change to start my safety career in construction, I immediately noticed the difference with the changing environment and how job tasks, environments, and hazards can change daily, presenting new challenges for each crew. Since starting with Spiniello I have seen great improvement with every crew and how they implement new processes, trainings, and tools to create safe working environments. While visiting jobsites I have learned a tremendous amount of information from supervisors and employees that will help add to my knowledge of controlling hazards and getting employees back home to their families safely every day.
